Sociedad Municipal Aguas de Burgos (SMAB) leads one of the most innovative projects in the country in the digitalization of the urban water cycle: +WEBUR (+WaterEcoBurgos), within the PERTE de Digitalización del Ciclo del Agua (NextGenerationEU). This program, awarded by MITECO and recognized with the iAgua 2025 Award for the Best Digitalization Project, marks a before and after in Spanish water management.
As part of this strategy, Tecnigral was the company in charge of the topographic survey and inventory of wells and the sanitation network, a fundamental task to lay the foundations for the future Integrated Management Plan for the Sanitation System (PIGSS).
The challenge
Burgos needed millimeter-precision mapping of its sewage network: more than 30,000 wells and 750 km of collectors, whose information had to be integrated directly into the Aguas de Burgos GIS system. It was a major technical and logistical challenge: to achieve ±1 cm accuracy, complete georeferencing and data traceability, all in complex and active urban environments.
Our team combined advanced surveying technology and digital methodology. Each borehole was surveyed both above and below ground using total station, GNSS RTK, optical scanner and high resolution photographic logging.
The works were executed with safety and quality control protocols in the field, validating in real time dimensions, coordinates and technical attributes (diameter, material, flow direction or state of conservation). Subsequently, the data were integrated into a structured georeferenced database for GIS, ensuring immediate compatibility with the SMAB system.
The result was a “high-definition topographic photograph” of the entire sewer network: a key tool for hydraulic modeling, predictive maintenance and intelligent asset management.
The challenge was to integrate more than 30,000 wells and 750 km of collectors into the Aguas de Burgos GIS system.
Results
- More than 30,000 registered wells and 750 km of collectors georeferenced with centimeter accuracy.
- Data ready for the digital integration of the +WEBUR project, strengthening the leadership of Aguas de Burgos in water innovation.
- Technical basis for the Integrated Sanitation Management Plan, which optimizes costs, improves resilience to extreme rainfall and reduces losses and leaks.
- Reaffirmation of Tecnigral’s role as a reliable technological partner in complex, technically demanding projects financed with European funds.
